Viewing the Volumes of Historical Prints
A most exclusive art experience: the ALBERTINA Museum’s volumes of historical prints.
The name ALBERTINA stands not only for a palace and for an art museum, but also for one of the world’s oldest, largest, and best-known collections of graphic art.
Its origins date back to the 18th century when Duke Albert of Sachse-Teschen (1738–1822), the present-day institution’s namesake and founder, began acquiring exceptional old master prints from the Renaissance and later that he then had categorized according to a custom-devised system. This collection, continually added to by his successors, now numbers an estimated 900,000 individual prints. Unique here are not just the artworks, however, but also their means of storage: until well into the 19th century, such prints were typically mounted and stored in large double folio volumes. In many places where this was the case, however, the artfully produced volumes from back then ended up being taken apart and are now lost.
This did not happen at the ALBERTINA Museum: to this day, our institution is home to 1,436 of these original albums—a cultural rarity of inestimable value.
Enjoy an exceptional experience of art: special protective measures now make it possible to view selected historical volumes in an exclusive, small-group setting.
